that would be a hard bet... but I would have likely gone with Big Red too... he just ran away from the field almost every race.

That's how I think of him, so far ahead that other horses were out of camera range.

what I remember is that he could have easily just cantered over the finish line... but he had race and course records to set.

It's even more impressive than I remember. And you're right, he just kept pushing towards the finish even though he left everyone else so far behind! That longest race is the toughest of the three, that's the one that's the biggest test and he won by 25 lengths!

I grew up in Saratoga and remember all the horses. My Dad took us to the track occasionally just to see the horses and we'd pick our favorites at home before the big races.

...I thought this was a pretty interesting concept. I'm not sure how a dead closer like Whirlaway was up close to the leaders early, while Calumet stablemate, Citation, a horse that was more comfortable stalking the pace, was at the back of the pack. Still tho, it was fun to watch.
