Following years of protests from fans and Native American groups, the Cleveland Indians have decided to change their team name, moving away from a moniker that has long been criticized as racist, three people familiar with the decision said Sunday.
The move follows a decision by the Washington Football Team of the N.F.L. in July to stop using a name long considered a racial slur, and is part of a larger national conversation about race that magnified this year amid protests of systemic racism and police violence.
Cleveland could announce its plans as soon as this week, according to the three people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
It is not immediately clear what Clevelands exact steps will be beyond dropping the Indians name. The transition to a new name involves many logistical considerations, including work with uniform manufacturers and companies that produce other team equipment and stadium signage.

(25,894 posts)just be the Cleveland Baseball Team. No need to rush into a new name. Plus, having a hiatus between the Indians name and whatever the new one will be, will allow everyone to adjust to the change.
I haven't an opinion about what Cleveland's new name should be, but I'm rooting for The Washington Azaleas.

(25,894 posts)I do think that either name would be perfect.
Honestly, something like the Azaleas or the Cherry Blossoms would be a wonderful change from the current run of team names.
So what should the Cleveland team call itself? The Dragon Flies? the Sweet Gums? The Cleveland Mayflies?
How about the Kansas City Chiefs? The Lightning Bugs? The Cicadas? Kansas City Sycamores?
Ohh, the possibilities are endless.
And while we're at it, major league baseball teams need to adopt colors other than blue. I honestly can never tell what team is playing because they all have the same colors. What is with that? NFL teams have no problem with colors. Nor do basketball teams. Dear lord, what is wrong with baseball?

(36,458 posts)CLEVELAND President Donald Trump has weighed in on the report that the Cleveland Indians will soon drop their controversial team name, calling it the latest example of cancel culture.
On Sunday, The New York Times reported the team is planning to drop the nickname it has used for more than a century and will become the latest franchise to abandon the Native American imagery.
Oh no! What is going on? This is not good news, even for Indians. Cancel culture at work! https://t.co/d1l0C9g6Pd

Manager Terry Francona said in July that he believed the time had come for the team to change its name after more than 100 years.
I think its time to move forward, Francona said. Its a very difficult subject. Its also delicate.
The New York Times said the team could announce plans for a new nickname as soon as this week.
A Twitter poll posted by News 5's Camryn Justice in July showed that 70.9% of respondents didn't want the team to change its name. It reflects the sentiment News 5 generally sees on its social media pages, where many fans are vocal in their support of the Indians team name and Chief Wahoo logo.
