Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona: Argentina captain won't sign new contract
Lionel Messi will not re-sign with Barcelona, the club announced on Thursday.
The Spanish club said in a statement that it cannot afford to resign Messi due to "economic and structural" issues. Messi, 34, has been a free agent since his previous terms expired on June 30.
The club said in a statement: "Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalized due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations).

This is a big deal. I've heard in the past that Barcelona might go bankrupt if he doesn't sign due to lost revenue and possibly lost standing in things like the Champions League.
