For example; the Dodgers owe around $40MM this year to a combination of released players like Brian Wilson and Dustin McGowan as well as traded players such as Matt Kemp who have portions of their contracts taken on by their former team.

picked up local kid, Scott Kazmir to put a solid #2 starter in their pitching roster.

It's been a painful 5 years, but things are looking really good for the team with huge amounts of young, burgeoning talent like Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Marwin Gonzalez, George Springer (out with a broken wrist), and pitchers - Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, etc.

Then there's the Red Sox, stuck with fat contracts to Sandoval and Ramirez.

Baseball's killing itself with these contracts. The average fan's age is maybe 50. My favorite watering hole has the baseball package and nobody under 40 even watches. Too bad because it's a great game.
