Any experience with hybrid bicycles?

I'm looking for a 5 mile commuter bike. Any experience with electric assist bikes? Durable? Good battery life? Known problems?

2. Another interested. From what I've read, there are a bunch that will

do well at that distance. Someone posted a few months ago about one they got on Amazon significantly less than $1000.

3. All available bikes should do 5 miles easy...

In my case, 5 miles of purely using the throttle (no pedaling) uses about 100wh of power. All ebikes have batteries with more capacity than that.

I have a cheap Chinese kit (bought years ago) that works great, but is heavy. I replaced the battery with one from Luna Cycle, known American supplier of durable batteries (all made in China, but using Panasonic cells). I found a steel-frame bike in my neighbor's trash to put the kit on.

Radpower bikes have good reviews, but if you can DIY it a kit would be much cheaper depending on what you spent on the bike.

4. Downhill power generation?

Do they generate power when going downhill or when you're pedaling? I wonder if I making good assumptions.

Question: Do Rad Bikes charge when the bike is going downhill/pedaling or does the battery only charge on the charger?

This is my fantasy retirement vehicle. Throw on a rear cargo rack and I'm off to town (4 miles). Anyone who's ever read my other post, I gather acorns, hickories, walnuts, apples.... and randomly plant the seeds. This would be perfect for picking them up and distributing them. I can start cruising farther. Knee replacement be damned!

7. I have a Verve+

Yes it was expensive but it's been great. I put about 1400 miles on it this year. Where I live it's hilly and hills that would have been impassible for me before are now doable. I still get a workout on them but the electric assist motor is a big help.

I try not to go full on turbo but dial it back so I still have to work a bit.
