The wild turkeys are back

Last winter I fed 15 turkeys. I heard from others that there was a flock back in town and they are now here. I count 23 of them. Put out about 9 lbs of feed today. I called the local feed department about prices for oats and whole corn and I figure it'll cost me about $50 a month to feed that many but I don't mind. More importantly my wife doesn't either as she knows how much I enjoy doing so.

We keep our bird feeders filled all year round, and I guess it's a labor of love, as well, since I love watching them.

But we have the suet and bird feeder with black sunflower seeds out in the fall, winter and spring.

In Winters past I used to fill the birdfeeder with the usual mix of sunflower seeds, millet, etc. But that got expensive and those sunflowers hulls and millet waste killed the grass and garden in the Spring.

So, I found the cracked corn for $6/large bag in the poultry department of some stores. Not in the wild bird seed section where they may have some cracked corn but the price was higher.

I found a variety of birds ate the corn and there was no waste on the ground. And much less expensive to watch the birds on a cold Winter day.
