Loon killed bald eagle by stabbing its heart, Maine biologist finds

BRIDGTON — A bald eagle died last year in Maine after being stabbed through the heart by a loon, wildlife officials said.

A biologist at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife recently got word about the July 2019 attack, the Bangor Daily News reported Wednesday.

Danielle D’Auria believes it to be one of the strangest cases of eagle death she has ever seen.

The bird had been found by a loon biologist in New Hampshire with a puncture would in its chest. A dead loon chick was discovered near the eagle.

When D’Auria heard about the case she had the bird radiographed for a possible bullet wound, because it is illegal in the U.S. to kill bald eagles.

The evidence showed no gun residue but indicated that the big bird had been stabbed through the heart by the beak of a loon.

Could be sharp too. They are really strong so I could see a well placed strike resulting in a lethal puncture.

“A biologist . . . recently got word about the July 2019 attack, the Bangor Daily News reported Wednesday.”

Ghost of a Loon is dumbfounded. “That Eagle was EATING my kid, and they call ME the attacker! What the actual f*ck, man!”

I read that title so wrong. I assumed it was another stupid person doing it. I had no idea it was an actual loon bird that did it.

If a baby loon chick was nearby, then....mama loon didn't like the eagle killing her baby. I would guess too.

going after an Eagle. The Eagle came down on a little island not far for me and grabbed a gull chick out of a nest and flew up into a pine tree and ate it. Gulls were going nuts the whole time. Didn’t know if I should cheer the gulls or the Eagle.
