(2,528 posts)In the past week, I've seen the following while out and about:
Four Red-tailed Hawk nestlings in two separate nests. Both pairs were flexing their flight muscles even though they are mostly fluffballs.
An Eastern Phoebe nest with three nestlings. Mom and dad flew in and out all day bringing bugs to them.
A pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers bringing food to their nestlings in a dead walnut tree. The clever couple put the nest under a shelf mushroom to keep the weather out (I've seen this several behavior several times in the past few years.)
A Baltimore Oriole pair has their "dirty sock" nest hanging in a neighbor's yard. I heard the young squawking last evening when dad showed up with dinner.
And finally, a pair of Robins has a single nestling outside my office window. Even a single bird keeps the parents busy all day.

(2,528 posts)Must be loads of fun to have them that close your home.
I was on the GAP trail heading back to Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon and spotted a pair of Ospreys on their nest (before Kennywood Park). One flew down to the train tracks and grabbed a hunk of wood - which looked like a piece of a broken railroad tie - and took it back to the nest.
Seemed like the oddest piece of wood to have in the nest.

(16,389 posts)In some of those pics of the chicks, I can see the little bumps where the feathers are getting ready to sprout! (I'm sure there's a technical term, but I don't know know what it is, lol.) It's great to be able to see that kind of detail.
