The migratory birds
Orioles came back May 6, which is late, and only one came back then disappeared. He came back the next day with another male, then they disappeared and brought back a few more. Only saw one female.
Usually they arrive the last day(s) of April, and that's when I put out my jelly and oriole feeder with sugar water.
One hummingbird came back on May 7, haven't seen him since that day. Haven't seen a tree swallow this year.
Great year for Redwings, and they look beautiful...very few grackles. They must have had a nasty trip back.
Have seen a male rose-breasted grosbeak only once so far this year, but the females spend a lot of time with seeds and suet.
Robins are happy eating grapes, sharing with cardinals. They wait for the serviceberry tree to fruit, then are joined by catbirds and cedar waxwings. I love the catbirds, and they seem to like humans.
The ground-feeding sparrows with white threads on their heads are all back, getting the space they need on the ground from the juncos who left a day or two before the sparrows arrived.
When I see these birds come back after a year's absence, I am always in awe and amazed. Not too many things give me this feeling of deep satisfaction, in the Microsoft gadget store or any other store...
