NCAA could begin interviewing Arizona State coaches next month: Source

The NCAA’s investigation into the Arizona State football program could begin interviewing Sun Devils coaches as soon as next month, a source familiar with the investigation told The Athletic.

For at least a month, the NCAA has interviewed high school prospects who allegedly visited Arizona State’s campus during the recruiting dead period put in place amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It's believed that these interviews led to the Aug. 9 suspensions of receivers coach Prentice Gill and defensive backs coach Chris Hawkins. Tight ends coach Adam Breneman was also placed on paid administrative leave July 16.

The investigation began in the spring when Arizona State’s compliance office received an anonymous package that outlined alleged recruiting misdeeds that took place during the non-contact period. The package reportedly included receipts, screenshots and other documents that showed how Arizona State paid for and covered up these visits. The NCAA began investigating soon thereafter.

Neither coach Herm Edwards nor recruiting coordinator Antonio Pierce have commented directly on the allegations, but if proved true, they could alter the program’s direction. In some ways, they already have. The suspensions of Gill, Hawkins and Breneman robbed the program of three of its top recruiters, stalling momentum the Sun Devils had made in three-plus years under Edwards.
