Anyone else play emulated console video games on their computer?

I love playing old games I haven't seen in YEARS. I'm currently on a Final Fantasy 6 kick, right now!

There is a very good Japanese-to-English translated ROM of Final Fantasy 5 out there, where I can't remember. The game was never released in the US, but it's awesome.

It's interesting to reexperience the games from my youth.

And I'm absolutely amazed by the music they were able to coax out of that SID chip!

I still have my 386 in storage but I stopped playing games on it because I think it has a virus -- every time I open a game on it, the directory disappears next time I reboot. Of course most of these were games from the 90s pirated from schoolmates via floppy, but they were all classic.

But technically, I could get DU to pull up on the 386, I used to have skillz when I was a kid.

I had to edit the autoexec.bat file to get it to run certain things.

But yes, if you want to get most classic adventure / strategy games to play on a PC like Dune 2, Space Quest, etc. you need an x86 or DOS Box

DOSBox for my old computer games, MAME and emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD and Game Boy. I've mainly been playing the original PGA Tour for PC. Pretty fun, but I'm kinda terrible at it.

I first played it in 1999 and really loved it. As a person who loves strategy/wargames it was my first initiation into that genre.

But If you like playing it I would suggest PanzerCorps. It's identical to Panzergeneral (They even have some of the same maps!) but release last year. Check it out. its worth it. I got it when they had it on sale on Steam, for 9$

My current all-time fav is the wargame "Hearts of iron 3:Semper Fi"
Its really awesome!

I use PCSX2 to Emulate Playstation games on my PC.

I'm a PC gamer...and do not own any consoles. However I love the final fantasy series. (except for the ff13 which kinda sucked..but hopefully they will make good on their promises and rectify that mistake and return to the original style in the next version)

However When the Final Fantasy series went a Playstation exclusive in early 2000s (the last FF game for pc was FF8), I had to rely on emulators to play the subsequent ones on my PC.

Imho PCSX2 is the best Playstation/Playstation 2 emulator out there, with full quad-core and Video card support for emulation.

in the past 5+ i've lost most interest in such things. still love my old video games, but i don't go out of my way for emulation anymore. probably due to going through so many PC crashes and updates and losing all my previous progress in games had something to do with it. now i'm on OS X and there's not as many emulators i like -- and i'm not all that interested in boot camp dual booting just for some old games.

i'd have to get a game dedicated PC and run it as my MAME arcade box. but i have other expenditures in the way before that.

I first saw it on a friends amiga in the '80s and was pretty impressed. Other than that I pickup an occasional oldie from GOG preloaded in dosbox. Most are new to me anyway because I was too busy with work and family to get much gaming time in in the '80s and 90's.

I played it on my Amiga as a kid. I never got all that far (I think the save system didn't really work for me), but I remember hauling back and forth between San Francisco and Dar-Es-Salaam a lot. Seemed like I couldn't find all too many other profitable routes. And I remember groaning every time I would run into a tugboat strike and have to dock the ship manually.

You're playing a PC version of Ports of Call, right? I'll have to see if I can find one.

The PoC classic for pc looks and plays similar to what I remembered on the Amiga, I think that's 4 euro. That's all I was looking for when I did a web search, but I thought it was cool that it's still alive when I found the website so I ended up buying the lifetime license and getting all the bells and whistles. I found it a little over a year ago and there was just a recent update. Pretty amazing for a game that started on the Amiga in the 1980's imo.

Emulators allow us to play leaked long forgotten prototypes plus the whole "Copyright" terms has gotten way out of hand anyway (what it's like 120 years now?). Also if I end up really liking a ROM I am playing I will end up buying a actual physical copy of the game if possible to support the developers of the game.

My father wanted me to clear out his cluttered laptop and discovered he had MAME with 7 gigs worth of roms. Was more than happy to port 3000+ games using my old ipod as a flash drive. Every game I've ever played since I was a kid including Moon Patrol, Time Pilot and Mr. Do. I prefer the Znes emulator because it comes with Pro Action Replay. I love Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger to death, but I prefer to skip the grind of games I already beat by maxing gold and exp after the first battle.

But a long while ago I played FF2 (because I was a complete FF1 junkie) on the PC NSX Emu. It was nearly completely translated from Japanese, because it was literally FF2, the one release for Nintendo (the first one) and not released in the US.

It was awesome when they released FF Origins for PSX and US folks could legitimately play both 1 and 2
