I'm looking at on Alaska tour that involves a road trip

from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks on the Dalton highway. I understand that a lot of that road is gravel. Can somebody out there give me a report on the Dalton highway?

I could stand some bumps here and there in the road. But if you're frequently encountering deep ruts and bumps in the road, I think I'll pass on that.

However it is not for the faint of heart, or wallet. You need take extra tires and extra gas because there are no services past a certain point a hundred miles north of Fairbanks. Once you get to Prudhoe, it dead ends at a big fence. There is no town to go to. The road itself is gravel, and for the giant big rigs that make the run. It really is not a tourist trip. If I'm not mistaken you can't even see the Arctic ocean!

There are other roads to take that are still gravel, and beautiful. The Taylor Highway goes to Canada, the Yukon and Dawson City, and is outstanding views. Also the trip from Cantwell to Paxon on the Denali Highway is just about the most beautiful trip Ive ever taken.

Have fun
