5 of the Most Common Flight-Booking Myths

I don't believe that there's any secret to nabbing a good price on airfare. When I'm getting ready to travel, I just go to the airline's website and book the times that work best for me, then quit looking.

I've tried all kinds of things---and never really notice a significant difference (other than prolonged stress worrying about it). I used Expedia recently and it said something like "prices are high now---wait and let us let you know when they drop" or something along those lines. They never dropped. I just worried about it longer. Like you, I should have bought them and moved on. I also realized that booking directly with the airline and hotel is better, as most package deal sites are non-refundable but the airlines and hotels are (somewhat) more flexible.
