Rick Santorum's Political and Biblical Mistake - Huffpo

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-raushenbush/what-the-bible-says_b_1287066.html#s308815&title=Luke_62021

Sen. Rick Santorum has made a serious mistake.

On Saturday, the presidential hopeful was addressing a group in Ohio when he made the unfortunate assertion that Obama's agenda is:
"not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."

The first reason this is a mistake is that Santorum has decided to make the presidential campaign about religious orthodoxy and introduced theology into politics in an aggressive way. His less than subtle message is that anyone who believes in the Bible, or even takes the Bible seriously, should be suspect of the president who is serving up 'false teachings' referencing Matthew 7:15 which reads: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

Santorum's recent comments should be a major turn off to anyone who understands that while all politics are informed by values, religious and secular, we should be very wary when politicians begin to assert religious creedal tests into electoral politics.

As my father has said, Santorum is pushing the Catholic version of sharia law, which is really frightening.

went on about Kennedy's Catholicism speculating he would be taking orders from the Pope. Now it seems that people want, more like demand, their politicians to take orders from the Pope.

All this hyper-religiousity coming from Santorun is really really over the line. It's creepy and should give everyohe cause to pause. Do we really want the Government injecting religious dogma into its agenda? We hate to see it occuring in other countries, why should it be different here?

Frothy (and I suspect most Republicans) has obviously never read Article VI of the U.S. Constitution. He appears to be trying to interject a "religious test" into the campaign.

wtf kind of theology does Santorum subscribe to? He just said that the murdering of scientists in Iran is "a wonderful thing". Wtf kind of pro-life Catholic is he?

Whose theology is phonier than Rick Santorum's?

I think that it would sideline the hardcore evangelicals in this country for good. Having this nonsense put on the National stage where it is in everyones face will make most puke. This is the best thing that could ever happen to our secular country.

The Repub Party has no spine, no backbone without these kooks.

It will be hard pressed to come up with courageous candidates the next time around.

Then, of course, there's all those bigots, racists, and religious kooks who think Obama hasn't acted fast enough to double their income, or get them jobs, and still think it's not THEIR fault they are out of work, but Obama's.

Some of them are stupid white men who would vote for Santorum, but most of the rest of the nation couldn't vote for such a nutcase as Santorum.

Can you imagine people like Romney and Gingrich having to defend Santorum as the standard bearer of the party? It will be a laugh a minute!

And I'm an Evangelical of sorts. Some of the people who have set themselves up as political power brokers in the Church just make me want to scream. They sold themselves and their congregations to the GOP for cheap.

He's quoted on Drudge, of all places, today as having said "We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it." I'm sure lots of main line churches will take exception to that. Maybe they'll be so upset they'll endorse a Mormon? The GOP is doomed. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of nuts.
