Pope Francis on Thursday marked the first anniversary of his election in prayer and quiet contemplation of the meaning of Lent, far from the adoring crowds and controversies of Rome.
In keeping with Franciss tendency to eschew much of the pomp and ceremony associated with his role, the anniversary was not marked in any official way, with the exception of a solitary tweet from the official @Pontifex account.
Please pray for me, the 77-year-old wrote to his 12 million followers in nine languages, echoing an appeal he made in his first address to followers from the balcony of St Peters Basilica exactly one year ago.
Francis was spending the day on a pre-Easter spiritual retreat in the Castelli Romani, a picturesque area on the southeastern outskirts of Rome.
He left the Vatican on Sunday after his weekly blessing and will return on Saturday.

(13,029 posts)Assuming he actually believes that sufficient, well crafted prayer can bring about god's favor, why would he want people to pray for HIM, instead of all of the other needier, more worthwhile things and people they could be praying for?

(11,573 posts)that a few people will manage to summon outrage no matter what Francis does or doesn't do. This one's a prize-winner, though. Apparently he thinks prayer is a finite commodity to be rationed.

(1 post)Successful prayer is not a prayer that is "well crafted" but a prayer that is from the heart and simple, such as "God, please help me with the problem I am having."
The Pope is asking for prayers of strength so that he can do what he needs to do as Pope. When "believers" pray, it is common to pray for leaders, such as our President, our Congressmen and our Senators, although none for them are needy in the material sense. Our Leaders need our prayers so that they will be good, honest leaders and resist the temptations they may have.
When a "believer" prays, many times prayers are said for our leaders and they are intermingled with prayers for the poor, those in war torn countries, those who are ill, those who are lonely, and for our soldiers to return safely.
For those who pray sincerely, it IS a dilemma as to who or what to pray for first! This week, I will start out my prayers with a prayer for YOUR special concerns.
May you have a good and fulfilling life.

(13,029 posts)for what he "needs", and cut out the middleman. God does answer ALL prayers, right? Unless god counts noses in deciding which prayers to answer (or should I say, which prayers to answer "yes" and which prayers to answer "no" . I guess he must, if some people are praying for the field goal to be good, and some people are praying for it to be wide.
Of course, you'd think god could just figure out what needs doing and take care of it himself, unless he really likes the sound of people begging him for stuff.

I also enjoy that you seem to be an arbiter of what is or is not a successful or properly formatted prayer.

(13,029 posts)I prefer to mock people who idolize him. And there are plenty, even on a progressive web site, amazingly.
