Brittany Maynard, a 29 year old newlywed with a diagnosed terminal illness is choosing to end her life in a dignified manner. Since then, there have been an overwhelming response from my fellow Christians decrying this decision, an Open Letter from Kara Tippetts hosted by wildly popular author Ann Voskamp, as well a letter from renowned evangelical influencer, Joni Eareckson Tada.

I don't face a terminal illness diagnosis, but I am drawn to this conversation because I believe the brutality of such an impossible decision owns potential for profound beauty. To consider how to die is a tandem reflection on how then, we must live. The intricacies and nuances of this delicate matter require our most tender deliberation in order for us to uphold the sanctity of human life.

The decision to prematurely die with dignity or to let a painful, terminal illness take its course, is an impossible one. Meaning, either path is fraught with unbearable heartbreak and gut wrenching realities.

Anyone who has to make this decision is a hero.

1. Why do you keep posting articles

with titles that are lies? With titles that grossly misrepresent what is actually written?

Frankly, it's rather tasteless, to the point of being ghoulish, for so many internet hacks to try to fill column inches and get attention writing about someone else's life decisions that they really know nothing about.

Exactly.

Ghoulish is the word I was looking for this morning. Awful lot of fucking words from that author, none of which call out the Catholic doctrines against physician assisted suicide, nor their crusade to keep physician assisted suicide illegal nationwide. (Five states have now managed to legalize it, despite millions of dollars in lobbying and bullshit outright lying ads whenever it comes up for vote)

3. Romanticizing and waxing poetic about someone else's

impending death is not what a decent person does.

I translate this: I believe the brutality of such an impossible decision owns potential for profound beauty. as "I think I can get a lot of pages clicks writing about this"

4. Such decisions are tough on the sufferer and loved ones that wish they live forever

(or at least as long as they do). But to accept the circle of life is to accept death since it is a part of it all. If one chooses not to suffer any longer, I can't see requiring they do so. Part of love is not wanting them to suffer. Acceptance vs desire sometimes conflicts.
