NEW: Bishop Tobin Questions If Elorza is an Atheist

Wednesday, October 22, 2014
GoLocalProv News Team

In a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, the Bishop of the Providence Diocese wrote a blistering piece questioning of Democratic candidate Jorge Elorza's belief in God.

The entrance of the Bishop creates a new twist in the race. For a City with a vibrant Latino population that is a critical voting block, to have the leading Catholic in the state raise questions about Elorza's belief in God is a major hit to Elorza.

In addition, Buddy Cianci hosted a visit and endorsement from PC Basketball great Ray Flynn - he also served as Mayor of Boston and was the Ambassador to the Vatican.

This is bullshit.

When Kerry ran in 2004 and was getting shit from bishops, including denying him Communion, about his pro-choice stance, the pastor of my parish wrote an article on the parish blog titled "Is John Kerry Really A Catholic?" I replied to it and asked if Francisco Franco was really a Catholic. The pastor died a couple of years ago. I hope he's gotten his answer.

A fitting "professional background" for the position of Vatican ambassador.

Oh wait -- that was Flynn? Well, I suppose you can judge both men by the company they keep.

Elorza has no chance anyway as he is young and inexperienced. RI voters will forgive Buddy, because they remember the prosperity that he presided over (even though it was built on corruption and he was, to coin a phrase, "guilty as sin&quot . Buddy will get in on name recognition alone; that said, I don't think Elorza's beliefs have anything to do with whether or not he'll balance the budget or create jobs. But then, I live in MA where (ironically) Kennedy's Catholicism came into play as regards whether he was a viable candidate for POTUS or whether he would "subvert American sovereignty to the Vatican." Funny how the RCC forgets about that.

Tobin, meanwhile, is an obnoxious troll who inserts his nose in practically every single fucking debate that is really none of his or the CC's fucking business. Staunchly condemned the brave young woman who won the 1st Amendment suit against Cranston High School and predictably shit all over Lincoln Chafee for the "holiday tree" controversy (personally, I think he undid himself when he put a menorah outside the RI state house and made himself look like a hypocrite -- he should have had NOTHING, period).

RI is in danger of repeating history by having a constitutional convention. In 1986 (NB: during Reagan's administration), right-wingers (heavily bolstered by the RCC) put anti-choice language into the new constitution that took years to undo. I say who the fuck is the Catholic Church to weigh in on "sexual morality" as they covered up the unconscionable crimes of scores of pedo priests. Bishop needs to know his role and SHUT HIS MOUTH.
