Last updated at 15:31 12 April 2007
Pope Benedict has aired his views on evolution for the first time - and says he partially believes Darwin's theories.
The Pontiff said science had narrowed the way life's origins are understood and said Christians should take a broader approach to the question.
However, he did not adopt a strictly scientific view of the origins if life, believing instead that God created life through evolution.
He said he "would not depend on faith alone to explain the whole picture".

October 25, 1996|LAURIE GOODSTEIN | THE WASHINGTON POST
Pope John Paul II issued a statement this week saying new research shows that physical evolution is "more than just a theory," a significant step beyond the Catholic Church's pronouncement nearly 50 years ago that evolution was worthy of discussion but still an open question.
The pope nevertheless said the human soul is divinely created anew in each person, and not subject to the evolutionary process. Any other teaching, he said, is "incompatible with the truth about man."
His statement is not likely to shake many in his own church, which has long assumed the credibility of evolution and taught it in Catholic schools. But it may rattle some non-Catholic biblical fundamentalists who believe in creationism and have respected this pope for his traditionalist reputation.
The pope's message was made public Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, a group of eminent scholars--many of them Nobel Prize winners and non-Catholics--who meet annually at the Vatican to advise the church on scientific affairs. Their topic for this meeting was the origin of life and evolution.

(57,349 posts)A few posters tried to point it out in GD but were drowned out by the adulation from people who seem to think Francis is some sort of courageous rogue.
That's why I posted a 7 year old headline about the previous pope.

(9,116 posts)When we read about creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so, Francis said. He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.
Frankie doesn't accept evolution, he just denies less of it than the other guys.

(57,349 posts)I was referring to the 2007 headline Pope Benedict 'believes in evolution'.
But you're right, none of them are "evolutionists" as we're referred to in my part of the world.
I was trying to point out that even if Francis did accept evolution he's not the first pope to make the claim.
And that DUers who swoon over everything the guy says are acting more like Taylor Swift fans than informed liberals.
100+ recs for the GD thread, really?

Francis is still claiming his god created humans.
