The best Thanksgiving prayer you’ll read is this one—by an atheist

November 26, 2014
Rebecca Hale
President, American Humanist Association

There is so much to be thankful for each day.

Today we take the time to pause and acknowledge this special season of harvest and its traditions of sharing with those less fortunate.

We take time to notice the labor of others, from farm to table, that culminates in this feast.

Today we pause to recognize how fortunate we are and to be grateful for the bounty we share with friends, family and loved ones, be they with us or far away.

I don't mind what it's called as long as it's not called "vibes". rug Nov 2014 #2

Not sure, in this game of words, what I would call it, grace, invocation, flatulation? I associate "prayer" with deities, and "thankfulness" with actual beneficence.

Otherwise, as I said, it's very nice.

But definitely not a prayer.

But that's just the headline from a religious site, nso it's expected.

I would guess the author wouldn't call it that.

It's a good message though.

It was written by the president of the american humanist associaition.

This is the organization that is pursuing pastoral positions and probably the one most blurring the lines between what they are and what is religion. I am generally supportive of what they do.

Whether she called it a prayer or not is not clear, but it is being called that on many, many sites that are posting it.

What does one call a spoken piece of gratitude?

of the site.

I know she is an atheist, I suspect the headline was by an editor and not the writer.

category.

I suspect you are right about the headline. I tried to find an original post for this and failed.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's a good invocation. Is invocation all right? I can't seem to find an appropriate word. Perhaps the editor or author had the same problem.

Hope you and yours have a great Thanksgiving. I'm going to a pot luck with 225 people. Should be a blast.
