Religious leaders of several faiths on Monday said it was illegal for a north Louisiana district attorney who's gained national attention for his outspoken support of the death penalty to invoke the Bible when he called on a jury to impose the death penalty.
In a court filing on Monday, more than 100 religious leaders in Louisiana asked the Louisiana Supreme Court to throw out the death penalty imposed on a 27-year-old Shreveport man for smothering his 1-year-old son in 2012.
The religious leaders said Rodricus Crawford was wrongly sentenced to death by a Caddo Parish jury after District Attorney Dale Cox told the jurors the Bible condones the death penalty for child killers.
The legal brief a friend of the court filing on behalf of Crawford said Cox's Biblical references were both unconstitutional and wrong.

18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard. 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
and this passage of course
Numbers 31:17
Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,
Deut 13
15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.
1 Samuel 15:3
Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.'"

(17,862 posts)Merely pointing out how the Bible really should have no bearing on modern civil matters. The DA was highly improper in referencing it for a whole bunch of reasons.
I personally am against the death penalty. That is one reason why I am glad that I live in Iowa.

(7,316 posts)The DA was wrong to evoke the bible.
That said, those quotes illustrate why the bible is totally worthless as a moral guidebook, and instead is nothing more than a hate manual.
If this bible depicts your god, then your god is evil itself.
