By Mark Silk | 20 hours ago
The religious question that has dominated the fall campaign is: Why are (white) evangelicals supporting a thrice-married serial adulterer whose commitment to their issues abortion, same-sex marriage, religious liberty is vacillating and lukewarm?
Speaking at the Connecticut Forum Thursday evening, former George W. Bush speechwriter and evangelical pundit Michael Gerson offered a number of glum reflections on the subject.
A proper understanding of faith, he said, is fundamentally at odds with the transformation of the GOP into a European-style right-wing anti-immigrant party. You now have a white identity politics, a white resentment policy, that is being appealed to by the Republican nominee for president.
And: I thought the religious right had turned the page
but the religious right in this election is back with a vengeance. This has been a terrible season for the representatives of conservative religion.

(783 posts)Clearly most of them haven't even read the new testament, let alone the bible in its entirety. They have no concept of the central messages of the Christian teaching, specifically the twin principles of loving God and of loving one's fellow human beings. Yes, the book says that. Matthew chapter 22 verses 37 through 40, quoting Jesus directly. It's doubtful any of them are familiar with the content of the Sermon on the Mount, the central set piece of the teaching of Jesus, a big speech he gave on, yes, a mountain. This isn't too surprising given that they claim to be patriotic Americans and yet are unfamiliar with the contents of the Constitution, and in fact if asked directly they often voice disagreement with basic principles contained therein. They're just basically -- well, you know what they are. They support Trump rather than Clinton because Trump's views are closer to their own than hers are -- vastly closer.
Here's a link to an article on the general topic of Trump and Evangelical TCWMs:
"Trump embodies a narcissistic fantasy and defense against anxiety that is present in Traditional Christian White Males (TCWM), especially those who are disaffected (i.e., who have lower than average socio-economic status).":
