Jakarta protest: Thousands of hardline Muslims gather to demand jailing of Christian governor Ahok

Jakarta: About 150,000 Muslims from all over Indonesia stormed the streets of Jakarta on Friday demanding the arrest of the city's Chinese Christian governor in a demonstration that was largely peaceful despite the huge crowds.

Islamic hardliners want Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, widely known as Ahok, to be jailed for allegedly insulting the Koran.

About 20,000 police and military personnel secured the route of the demonstration in Central Jakarta amid fears it would be hijacked by extremists keen to foment violence.

Simultaneous protests took place in other Indonesian cities including Medan and Bengkulu.

I don't know if it's a ripple effect of Pakistan and Bangladesh, but it's there.

Malaysia: recently, there was talk of banning the term hot dog as un-islamic

Indonesia: beyond the Ahok incident, the 'moral police' in Aceh is becoming out of control
