Religious leaders create sanctuary churches, synagogues

BOSTON — Religious leaders gathered in Boston on Tuesday to announce the creation of sanctuary churches and synagogues across the state to protect worried immigrants.

Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN), Cosecha and other allies gathered at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul to discuss the ongoing executive orders issued by President Donald Trump.

“If it comes to it, we are willing to house someone who is facing deportation,” said Edwin Johnson, of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Providing a safe haven, a sanctuary space, is not easy. If taken in, those individuals cannot leave the sacred walls of safety without facing deportation.
