Some Alabama churches poised to protect undocumented immigrants

By Hanno van der Bijl

Several Alabama churches are poised to serve as "sanctuary churches."

Following Homeland Security's publication of President Trump's new immigration rules last week, various houses of worship across the country are taking measures to protect undocumented immigrants facing deportation.

Under President Obama, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents prioritized undocumented immigrants who were guilty of violent crimes or drug trafficking. President Trump's new rules would expand the list of deportees to those guilty of crimes such as faking credit cards or IDs.

Grace Presbyterian, with its tall ceilings and stained-glass windows, is a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation in Tuscaloosa. Its food pantry shows signs of decades of loving use and hospitality.

Asking why there are not more articles showing him in a positive light?

Why not?

You remind me of a poster who used to post here...you don't own any yachts do you?

Do you or your family make an income thru religion in any form? Like writing books and the like?

The similarities are striking - just want to see of you are my old friend - missed you...

Anything to say about the article, and how these religious people are apparently demonstrating that their beliefs are motivating them to act for the stranger among us?

Now your turn:

Are you on all the thrump threads too?

Asking why there are not more articles showing him in a positive light?

Why not?

And for the record, I was raised catholic, but thankfully never abused.

I like to debate in an open fashion - makes it easier that way...

I do not make a living or get income from religion in any way/shape or form and same goes for all my family and friends...

For instance - say, hypothetically, my father was a minister or preacher or whatever you want to call them, and he wrote books about the positive aspects of religion, chrisitianity, etc. and sold them as part or is his sole income. Anything I post in a 'religion' forum that only shows the positive aspects of the religion would be a little suspect..would it not? Like I am trying to sell my father's books...right?

That is why it is good be up front about such things.

I made my living representing union members for union for 37 years.

If you are asking if I receive payment to write about religion, the answer is no.

As to Trump, I cannot imagine anything that he would do that would be a positive, except possibly if he pled guilty to treason.

Of all the thousands of churches in Alabama, "several" have decided to shelter immigrants.

Edited for clarity.

And nothing about why the others did not. Anything else is your opinion.

Do you know for a fact that they are doing it for reasons that have nothing to do with their religion? Or are they doing it simply because they think their god figure requires it of them, and will be mad if they don't?

What else did you expect me to answer?

Deciding on motivation is not easy. People can often have multiple motivations for actions that they take.

Somehow, I doubt that's what you were referring to when you said it tells you something about them.

for all the churches that are serving as sanctuaries for immigrants. They are doing what I believe to be the right thing. And in red states, it will be even more unpopular, so they are living the word in the face of opposition. That's strength.

I'm happy most Catholic priests (at least ones I'm familiar with) are all on board the sanctuary train.
