New Testament Names - "Josh, We Never Knew Ya."

Disciples, apostles and all the rest. If you're an English-speaker, you've seen all their names in various translations of the New Testament. But, what names did they answer to in real life? See, we really don't learn that. They've all had name changes to make them seem more familiar to us. Few know what they were called back in the day. You might be surprised. Anyhow, here's a website where you can look up that information:

https://www.behindthename.com/glossary/view/new_testament

For example, some of the most prominent names had Hebrew or Aramaic origins, like:

Matthew, who was called מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattityahu) meaning "gift of YAHWEH" in Hebrew
John's name was יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious"
James was called Ya'aqov (see JACOB) in Hebrew. Not even close.
Thomas was תָּאוֹמָא (Ta'oma') which meant "twin". I doubt he would answer to Thomas.
In his home territory, Peter probably went by the Aramaic name Cephas, meaning "stone"
Mary? Well, she would have gone by the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam).

What about Jesus? Well, he would have spoken Aramaic, and would have been called יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshu'a). Yeshu'a is itself a contracted form of Yehoshu'a (see JOSHUA). Maybe his family and friends just called him Josh. Who knows?

Of course, we have no idea who those people actually were, nor if they had those names back in the day. They could even be made up names for the characters in the story. But, the website is interesting and has lots of other information about Biblical names, and names in general, if you're interested.
