Bill Maher's Campaign Prediction: Obama Will Come Out As An Atheist

Posted on January 13, 2012

On the season premiere of his HBO program, Bill Maher speculates about what President Obama will do if he gets a second term.

While discussing Obama and the issue of gay marriage with his panel on "Real Time," Maher, the host, says we are going to "see the real Obama come out" if he is reelected.

Maher believes Obama will come out for gay marriage and also admit that he is an atheist too.

"I'm just trying to get it real and keep it fair. And I think he will (Obama will come out in favor of gay marriage). I think in the second term, when he's got nothing to lose you're going to see the real Obama come out, including his admission that he's an atheist too," Maher said on HBO.

That's as likely as him stopping drone warfare.

IF he is re-elected!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, wouldn't that shock the religious folks here on the DU?

Would they feel embarrassed for supporting him for 2 elections?

I have absolutely no problem with Obama announcing himself as an atheist after he's got his last Congress, solid Democratic, House and Senate, after the election of 2014. THEN he can do it, as Elizabeth Warren or some liberal governor or senator announces for President in 2016

Why would they? I support candidates because of their platform, not because they are either believers or non-believers.

I would think that Democrats who value Church/State separation as a founding principle would also recognize and value Article VI, sec. III of the Constitution, which I believe you are familiar with (no snark intended).

"...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

He's already one of the first presidents to really pay lip-service to non-believers in many of his speeches.

Considering how much he's had to distance himself from his past church affiliations (does he even attend church regularly any more?), it would be amazing if he came out of the closet as a non-believer as well.

he was an atheist.

I am an atheist and had no problem voting for Obama when I thought he was a christian.

I'd love for him to "come out" as an atheist though. I reckon it couldn't make the folks who hate him hate him any more. They are pretty solidly on the hate wagon already.

Either way I'll vote for him again.

Although I wonder if it would even be funnier if he came out as a secret muslim. lol

His religious devotion is transparently utilitarian, and always has been. While he occasionally throws atheists a bone by mentioning them out loud, I don't think that makes him one of us.
