Associated Press photo Pope Benedict XVI kisses the Holy Gospel as he celebrates an Epiphany Mass in St.Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on Jan. 6. Christians — including Catholics — make up about 32 percent of the world's population, according to a recent survey, but Christianity is growing fastest in Africa and South America. That, according to Mark Hamilton of Abilene Christian University, means Christianity is no longer a predominantly European religion as it was in the past.

A newly released survey of world religion shows that eight in 10 people around the globe identify with a religion.

But that's not the big news from the findings, at least not to Mark Hamilton, associate dean of the Graduate School of Theology at Abilene Christian University.

A more telling statistic, Hamilton believes, is where the growth in Christianity is concentrated — below the equator in Africa and South America.

"To me," Hamilton said, "the big story here is that Christianity is no longer predominantly a European religion."
