(82,333 posts)He's referring to excommunication latae sententae which dosn't apply. And he has neither the grounds nor the balls to try for excommunication ferendae sententiae.

(24,225 posts)the thread is about the church being against abortion so that would be why the poster mentioned zygote protection in the context he used.

(26,355 posts)but they've been fine with Magdaline Laundries, and went to exceptional amounts of trouble (all the way to the top - why do you think Maladict resigned?) to cover up widespread child molestation by their priests.
And they claim to be so moral...

The real question I keep coming back to and you keep straw manning away from almost in an attempt to hijack the thread is what about the excommunication policy of the church over abortion?
You for it or against it?
I'm against it.

(24,761 posts)AFAIK, excommunication is appropriate when one directly participates in an abortion. Last I checked, merely voting to legalize abortion in extraordinary cases is not sufficient grounds for excommunication, and by no means directly participating in one. The cardinal is way out of line. He has no right to abuse his authority by threatening excommunication just to keep Catholic lawmakers in line.
He sounds like some of the cardinals on this side of the pond, using doctrine as a weapon instead of a teaching tool.
