Summer Solstice Pagan Festival has Pahokee residents outraged

By Amanda Ramos-Guy

PAHOKEE—Pahokee residents, church members, and pastors are outraged over an upcoming event at the Lake Okeechobee Resort and Marina. The marina will be hosting its first Lake Okeechobee Summer Solstice Festival – a program that organizers hope will become an annual event.

~snip~

Pastors from various churches in Pahokee attended Tuesday night’s city commission meeting to express disappointment in city leaders for allowing the event to come to Pahokee. The crowd cheered in agreement as, one-by-one, pastors from around the area admonished city officials for allowing festivals containing witchcraft and occult practices into the city.

“I just found out about this today. I am disappointed in the city of Pahokee for allowing this group to come,” said Pastor Brad Smith, Florida Director of Kids for Christ. Smith called the event “an abomination”.

“We don’t need this in our town. Not now. Not ever,” said Rev. Raul Rodriguez, of Church of God Door of Jesus Christ.

One of the speakers was concerned about belly dancing. Hasn't he seen Footloose?

In some places in this country, the local populations simply will not tolerate the presence of non-Christians in their midst. That's just a fact.

They say they are praying that this event will not take place. Let us hope that they restrict themselves to prayer in their efforts to prevent it from happening, and do not attempt to employ other methods such as disruption and threats.

“We cannot expect our city to survive and prosper if we allow these things,” said Pastor Eugene Babb, of Harlem Church of God.

No, I don't think the pagans will keep your town from surviving and prospering. I think it more has to do with the town's third grade average education, needed to provide fertile soil for so many Christian cults. Here are the ones mentioned in the article:

Church of God Door of Jesus Christ
New Destiny Community Church
Harlem Church of God
Saints on the Move
Hispanic Nazarene Church

Maybe the Solstice pagans should march down Main Street, too. Or maybe they should go door to door to gain converts. Set up a permanent temple.

His daughter, Ruby Rodriguez said that this came as a shock to her. “We do live in a free country but of all of the cities in Florida, why would they choose Pahokee?” she asked.

Obviously, because you're living in a backwater with cheap hotel rates-- despite all the good weather and sunshine-- due to all the bigotry and weirdo Christian cults you cultivate there.

These townspeople better hope that bigger Christian churches are always as tolerant as they are now. History has left that question open.

The Romans held a festival on December 25 called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, "the birthday of the unconquered sun." The use of the title Sol Invictus allowed several solar deities to be worshipped together, including Elah-Gabal, a Syrian sun god; Sol, the patron god of Emperor Aurelian (AD 270-274); and Mithras, a soldiers' god of Persian origin.[2] Emperor Elagabalus (218-222) introduced the festival, and it reached the height of its popularity under Aurelian, who promoted it as an empire-wide holiday.[3]

http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Invictus

John 1:3-5
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 3:18-20
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

John 9:5
5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

In the religious tradition in which I was raised - high church Episcopal - I don't recall anybody ever using this word "abomination" to describe anything. Now I see this word being used a lot by certain denominations. It's used when discussing gay people - we're "abominations." Now I see it applied to Pagans.

What does this word "abomination" mean in the tradition of certain denominations? Where did it come from? Why this particular word? I'm really curious about this.
