Advice for New Atheist

09 July 2013, 08:49
The Contrarian

I’ve decided to write a terse letter of instruction to those atheists who have just arrived (or soon will) on this side of the ideological and philosophical fence that separates ‘us’ from ‘them.’

Let me be the first to congratulate you on freeing yourself from the mind-forged manacles of faith and tradition.

While some people on this side of the fence might tell you that you’ve reached the top. I’m here to tell you that your journey has barely begun. So, on with it…

Please understand that none are more unconvincing than the men bearing and wearing shackles while wishing to educate others about freedom.

She is speaking primarily for tolerance, an open mind and against dogma. But she might want to heed some of her own advice, because she comes across as seeing herself as vastly superior to believers early on in the article.

Anyway, an interesting read and some interesting comments.

to mean "persons," "he" as indefinite pronoun. Even David Brooks has gotten beyond this.

OTOH, she has some good advice about not being taken in by cult figures.

The only time I remember the use of "men" and/or "he" was when she was talking about Plato and the other guy who are male. And I thought she was pretty good at the use of "you" as a generic.

You should heed the advice you're giving the author, Cbayer, when you are speaking primarily for tolerance, an open mind and against dogma. You might want to heed some of your own advice, because you often come across as seeing yourself as vastly superior to non-believers....
