Anti-Catholic Atheist to Deliver Diatribe on Evolution at Jesuit’s LeMoyne College

An outspoken atheist philosopher who has called for the Catholic Church's eradication will be speaking at LeMoyne College on the subject of science and religion in modern America.

An outspoken atheist philosopher who has called the Catholic Church “corrupt” and called for its eradication will be speaking at LeMoyne College in New York later this month.

Michael Ruse, PhD., who calls himself a non-believer, will be speaking at the Jesuit college on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at 7 p.m., to discuss "Does Evolution Have a Purpose?" Ruse has stated that “there is a flat-out contradiction between the claims of modern biological science and the theology of the Roman Catholic Church” and criticized Pope Benedict XVI for saying life was designed by God ...

The talk is part of the college’s ongoing “Science and Religion in Modern America” lecture series. The stated goal ... is “to engage members of the campus community…in a candid, respectful conversation about the complex and seemingly disparate subjects of science and religion.”

His evidence and writings on McClean v Arkansas (1982) were on target. But somewhere (and somewhen) Michael Ruse ran off the rails.

I don't know what he's about these days. I don't think I need to know. Nor do I care.

Atheists and their diatribes. Tsk tsk.

*************
I notice Ruse calls himself a non-believer. I wager many in his audience would call themselves Christians, but I don't see that in the article.

Guess I can't get too upset if someone who has also written enlightening pieces such as these is pissed off:

He is a respected philosopher. Even the Huffington Post piece that is cited in the OP's link is far more restrained than the excerpt would indicate. He does call for the eradication of the Catholic Church as it is currently constituted, but the article gives his reasons for that call:

...

Recently, the New Atheists' most prominent representative, Richard Dawkins, wrote a highly emotive piece for the Washington Post, in which he derided the present pope and expressed glee and satisfaction that such a person was now leading the Catholic Church. In Dawkins's judgment, not only was this no less than the Church deserved, but such leadership could only hasten the Church's demise. I thought at the time that Dawkins was over the top and wrong. I now think that he was right and that it was I who was wrong. Let me say at once that, unlike Dawkins, I don't necessarily want to see this as the end of religion or even of the Catholic Church in some form. I stress that although I cannot share the beliefs of Christians, I respect them and applaud the good that is done in the name of their founder. But I do now think that as presently constituted, the Catholic Church is corrupt and should be eradicated.

...

The article is worth reading.

Lying to make atheism and atheists look bad?

Sure glad that only happens on whacko Catholic websites and not on DU. And sure glad no one on DU is dumb enough or obsessed enough to take a "quote" from a whacko like this at face value.
