Personal need for advice
I have been wearing amulets promote healing from the trauma of cancer/mastectomy in April. (I am cancer-free, but the anxiety lingers.) I read online that the steps to charging the amulets (akin to sanctifying a religous medallion) would be to cleanse them (smudging), and then, within a cast circle, to hold them and imbue them with intentions. I have used the light of the full moon to charge an item in the past without casting a circle. Advice? Experience with charging instruments? (Why bother DU? The anxiety is side-lining me from my political activism.)

(8,130 posts)I read Caroline Myss many, many years ago (in the 90's?) where she basically said that if you want to heal you need to free yourself from such things (at the time I was very into amulets, etc., and always used them.) This horrified me, so I stopped reading her for about ten or fifteen years. Then I started reading her again (she IS a smart cookie, knows a LOT about healing and is very mystical/spiritual, however you want to call it.) Bottom line: I want to see you well, Prudence, but maybe the amulet, in a strange way, is keeping you holding on to being unwell, or that time before April when you were unwell -- maybe thank the amulet(s) for their help up until now and let them go?
Wishing you all the very best.

(855 posts)If it isnt charging maybe you could consider it actively impeding due to a material mismatch with the complicated circumstances, the circle part is merely focal in nature. Which in a way becomes a representation of your blockage. So melt it, cast it away, let it go, or hold it in suspension in your collection as something meant for another time and set of circumstances. Magic either works or it doesnt. Materials and people and circumstance rarely can be forced without significant external forces that can be risky. Sometimes the reward is worth it, sometimes theres a tangible benefit. Sometimes not. Keep in mind youre essentially asking for a very complicated and powerful magic from a single object that is relatively bare, not counting the effort taken to transform the base materials themselves and have them arrive in their current state. Much like with medicine and science, there is so much more than meets the eye with situations and objects. And people for that matter. I wish you well whatever step along your path you are on.

(838 posts)I have attracted compliments from friends and from strangers, especially young people, with very small amulets. So positive energy and connection is happening. I will try more wandering (my path) and less worrying.Thank you.

(11,295 posts)every step in your ritual must be associated with tranquility.
So the place, the time, and your state of mind at the time of the ritual are critical. But first, the amulets themselves. They are usually already imbued with intentions, not necessarily your own and not necessarily positive. Cleansing is meant to make them intention-neutral. I have a particular cleansing ritual that works for me. First, I use garden soil from a natural source (park, forest, flower patch, etc) I especially favor (not a bag of garden soil from Home Depot) to rub an amulet with, and I follow this with washing the amulet with running water afterwards, again, from the source I especially favor. It works well on metals especially. The circle helps isolate your body and focus your mind, but please don't allow your mind to wonder or focus on your anxieties once you step into the circle. The full moon may be a problem. It stimulates all impulses, both positive and negative, and, depending on how strong your self-control is, may bring about unintended consequences. Try new moon if you want to focus on tranquility, or half moon if you want to focus on balance.

(838 posts)The moon and the circle attitude info is very helpful. Most of my amulets are from loved ones so the are good. The recent ones that I ordered online don't quite feel like mine yet so a positive circle with a new moon sounds like it would help me bond to them. Thank you for your positive suggestions.
