Stephen Colbert Replaces David Letterman — Catholic Takeover Complete…

April 10, 2014
By Katrina Fernandez

… Joe Heschmeyer writes, Stephen Colbert and the Death of Protestant America:

Late-night host David Letterman recently announced his retirement: his ratings have not been faring well in the face of two new rivals, Jimmy Kimmel and now Jimmy Fallon. Today, CBS announced his replacement: Stephen Colbert. Deacon Greg Kandra was quick to point out one reason that this was significant, with the headline: “The Catholic takeover of late night TV is complete.” Letterman was the Protestant hold-out in late night. Once Colbert replaces him, networks will be hosted by Catholics.

What we’re seeing is not necessarily a resurgence of Catholicism, at least in any meaningful sense. Not all of the people we’re talking about here are model (or even practicing) Catholics, by any stretch. Rather, we’re witnessing the collapse of Protestantism.

not that I'd compare the Supreme Count to late night talk show hosts.

This is not to say that others do not. Certainly, degrees of piety is not the crux; it is the discernment, even from a Catholic who has divorced himself from the faith. There is an understanding about human nature and reality, an ability to compare and realise. Fanatics are not funny; perhaps peculiar, odd, crazy.

As a graduate student, i was the lone Catholic in a circle of friends and acquaintances. One point i tried to make was there is something like an indelible mark in the consciousness.

In defense of our friend David, i am not sure of his personal beliefs (for a public man, he displays a guardedness), but he has given evidence of having familiarity with Catholicism. And overall, he has not antagonism. Craig Ferguson, who is not Catholic, has understanding and respect of Catholicism and certainly rivals Colbert, who is not a scholar of Catholicism, in discernment.

What people do not realise, is that, comedy is truth.

Who do you know that discounts Arsenio Hall "by the 'not white' thing, almost as bad as the 'gay thing'...."

What a strange thing to say. I never heard anyone else say that.

Hands down, one of the stupidest conclusions I've ever read coming from Patheos (and there have been plenty of them).
