Now it appears Pope Francis didn't really say dogs to to heaven -

On Friday, Pope Francis delighted Catholic animal lovers all over the world by sharing these words of comfort with a little boy mourning the death of his dog: "One day, we will see our animals again in the eternity of Christ." The faithful took this as confirmation that, as the Disney movie says, all dogs plus other beloved house pets go to heaven. Unfortunately, it seems that something was lost in the translation.

I just Googled it, and found that out. I actually remember the interview with JP II, where he made his statement about it.

It drew an analogy to comforting words that Pope Paul VI was said to have once told a distraught boy whose dog had died: One day, we will see our animals again in the eternity of Christ. Paradise is open to all of Gods creatures.
The way I understand this, Pope Paul VI implied that our pets may go to heaven with us humans if we make it there. AFAIC, heaven includes having the ones we love with us in our afterlife, even if our loved ones have four legs and fur.
