Robert Blair Kaiser, longtime Catholic critic, reformer, dies at 84

To attend the wake for Robert Blair Kaiser last week, guests had to shuffle across an empty gravel lot and crowd inside the tiny Santa Lucia Yaqui Church in Guadalupe.

The church's dirt floors were still speckled with foil confetti from Easter celebrations the week before. Pastel tissue-paper flowers hung from the ceiling, casting shadows on the dusty walls. There were only a handful of folding chairs; most attendees, many in their 70s and 80s, stood through the speeches.

It was exactly what Kaiser would have wanted.

"He believed that this was the right way to worship," said the Rev. David Myers, a longtime friend of Kaiser who led the memorial service Thursday. "The people run this church."
