7 Jews in India die in a rocket attack on their synagogue. Here is why it was not considered an antisemitic attack.
A rocket attack on a synagogue in northeast India Monday killed seven members of the Jewish community, according to the Knesset’s Diaspora affairs committee.
The attack is not considered antisemitic, but rather an attack on Kukis, the minority group to which the Jews of India’s Manipur and Mizoram states belong. Relations between Kukis and the Meitei, a larger ethnic group in the region, have long been tense. But violence flared in May and fighting has persisted.
In light of this conflict, these Indian Jews, known as the Bnei Menashe, have pushed Israel to expedite their immigration to the Jewish state, even though Israel is deep in a conflict of its own. About 100 Bnei Menashe families who had already settled in Israel survived Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in Sderot and about 200 within the community have joined the war effort. One member of the group who lives in Israel, Isaac Thangjom, called the war with Hamas a “setback” in the Bnei Menashe’s plan to reunite in the Jewish state.
About 5,500 Bnei Menashe in India hope to join about 5,ooo already in Israel, the Diaspora committee said Tuesday in a press release.
