But North Korea has been detaining Americans for years and people still go.

Read this warning from State. It's pretty clear that is a bad idea to go there.

I only brought it up because you mentioned the phrase "discourage others."


It hasn't seem to discourage people from going. Americans are still visiting North Korea.

It sounds like he was taken in by some flashy advertisement for a trip there and in his youth thought it sounded legit and safe. In our youth we think we are invincible. Or that false advertising and dangerous scams only happen to Other People.
