A parade in Chicago celebrating the lesbian community banned three Jewish women carrying Jewish Pride flags.
Organizers of the 21st annual Chicago Dyke March told the women that the rainbow flags with a white Star of David in the center would be a trigger to people they found offensive.
A Dyke March collective member told the Windy City Times that the women were told to leave because the flags made people feel unsafe, and that the march was anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian.
More than 1,500 LGBTQ individuals and their supporters participated in Saturdays march. The march was protested at one point by Christian extremists, according to the Windy City Times.

In other words, seeing a magen david triggers their Antisemitism.

(23,557 posts)So Jews trigger their fear?
I would bet there are plenty of Jews at the Dyke March and this is going to be a big controversy.

(59,031 posts)That no one would have had issues with crescents on signs? Seriously, on a day that celebrates inclusiveness, I doubt anyone would have had an issue with the Star of David.

(3,030 posts)And fuck 'em. I hope the presence of my Jewish self and Jewish kids triggers them in life daily. And they can piss off if they want any support.

(34,112 posts)Do they not know the reasons we have fought against bigotry or do they think they have a different reason?
I keep fighting but have almost given up hoping that we will ever be able to curb this kind of crazy reaction to "others" even in our own groups.
So all flags that have a star of David are pro Zionist? smh
I find this almost more sad than some of the horror that is being thrown at us daily.

(3,030 posts)this group isn't very accepting of all lesbians and has a problem with those they consider to be "too butch".
So I'm guessing they aren't a mainstream LGBT org.

(53,966 posts)There is a lot of "self-loathing" within the gay community as is. "Too femme/too butch" are nothing more than heterosexist tools of oppression we apply to our own kind, but this display was pure anti-Semitism.

When will people start standing up for Jewish people? When is enough enough?

I'm disgusted by this. If the goal is to remove Jewish people from the Democratic Party, they're succeeding. I am the LONE Democrat at my shul, particularly because antisemitism is not only tolerated on the left, but a core value of a loud plurality.

(53,966 posts)The fact these bigots don't know what a fucking Israeli flag looks like (other countries flags were allowed, I'd love to know which ones and look at THEIR civil rights records in regards to the LGBT!). There actions were anti-Semitic. Full stop. Anyone trying to defend their actions, IMO, is also anti-Semitic and should be regarded as enemies of the Jewish people.
Thanks for the info. The pic also demonstrated the flag in question WASN'T an Israeli flag, it was a pride flag with a Star of David.

(5,591 posts)Jewish friends and the state of Israel. They may think they've won this battle but the war has yet to be fought. We won't cower and we won't be silenced.
It's hard to express the anger I'm feeling by way of a message board, but my resentment towards the treatment of Jews within our party is growing by the day.

(5,591 posts)This is my pride flag. It has the Islamic crescent and star on it, like the flags of Turkey, Pakistan, etc..
Should I and my flag be banned from Pride because of the countless horrific murders of LGBT people in Muslim countries, the state-sanctioned hatred and persecution of LGBT people? Because if you ban Jews and Jewish flags because you hate Israel, logically you have to ban me, too. Or you could just admit you're antisemites. What will it be? #DykeMarchChicago

(16,328 posts)NEW YORK (JTA) For years, Laurie Grauer had waved a rainbow flag emblazoned with a Jewish star at the Chicago Dyke March, sometimes marching near activists waving Palestinian flags. It had never been a problem.
But this year, Grauer was confronted by the LGBT parades organizers, questioned about her support for Israel and asked to leave because she was carrying the flag. She was one of three women with Jewish flags kicked out of Sundays parade.
Grauer says she was used to Israel being a sensitive issue in queer spaces. But she did not expect to be condemned for displaying her Jewish identity.
To say that you can only identify one way is very dangerous, said Grauer, the Midwest manager for A Wider Bridge, a pro-Israel LGBT group. Here you have this march that is supposed to be something for people that feel oppressed, invisible, marginalized, [where] they can be who they are. I wasnt pushing my views on people and was told the way youre expressing yourself is unacceptable.
The incident at the Dyke March was just the latest in a series of clashes over Israel at activist events for the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender, or LGBT, community. Being pro-Israel at LGBT events has become difficult, LGBT Jewish leaders say, and at times the opposition to Israel has spilled over into making Jews feel uncomfortable about displaying their identity.
Similar tensions arose earlier in June at the Celebrate Israel Parade in New York City, where activists from the far-left Jewish Voice for Peace infiltrated the parade delegation of Jewish Queer Youth, an LGBT group, and held anti-Israel banners. One of the protesters said he was there to counter Israels pinkwashing that is, to stop the pro-Israel LGBT group from using Israels relatively progressive attitudes to distract from the Palestinian issue.
Last year, an event featuring an Israeli group at an LGBT conference in Chicago was canceled, then reinstated, and took place amid vocal protest.
Nor are these debates new. In 2011, New York Citys LGBT Community Center agreed to lease space to Queers Against Israeli Apartheid, leading gay adult film star and pro-Israel activist Michael Lucas to call for a boycott of the center. The center relented, opting not to host any groups connected to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

(53,966 posts)This is the very example of "punching down" by one minority against another. The fact they have Jews (JVP) covering for their anti-Semitism, doubly ensures that, yes, their actions of expelling the Jewish women was anti-Semitism.

Zionism is an inherently white-supremacist ideology. It is based on the premise that Jewish people have a God-given entitlement to the lands of historic Palestine and the surrounding areas. This ideology has been used to justify dozens of laws that discriminate against Palestinian citizens of Israel, segregated road systems in the West Bank, and forced removal of Palestinian families from their homes in order to make way for Jewish-only housing, among other violent and discriminatory practices. We recognize that Zionism is not synonymous with Judaism, but instead represents an ideology that uses legacies of Jewish struggle to justify violence.

(3,051 posts)Apparently, reporting on discrimination against Jewish people is a firing offense:
http://www.algemeiner.com/2017/07/10/award-winning-journalist-who-broke-story-of-jewish-women-barred-from-chicago-dyke-march-removed-from-reporting-duties/
"An award-winning journalist who broke the story of the group of Jewish women ejected from an LGBTQ march in Chicago last month has been reassigned to non-journalistic duties at the paper which ran the original report, the Windy City Times.
Gretchen Rachel Hammond whose June 24 story caused a national storm after she detailed how three women flying Jewish Pride flags embossed with the Star of David were instructed to leave the gathering by organizers from the Dyke March Collective confirmed to The Algemeiner on Monday that while she was still employed by the paper, she was not presently engaged in its reporting and writing operations.
At this time, I have not been fired from Windy City Times, but I have been transferred to working full time for the sales department, Hammond explained in an emailed statement. The reasoning is an internal matter and I have been instructed not to comment about it even to close friends. Given my present situation, I must comply with this instruction."
Anyone want to hire a good reporter?
