(7,515 posts)I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. We used to love going to Riis Park beach because the waves were higher and rougher than any other beach in the area.

(14,075 posts)Are those the result of the storm, or was there clean up after the storm that dumped the sand there?
Did you notice the two shovels in the middle pile of sand?

(10,618 posts)Nowhere does it say Sandy caused these sand piles.
It seems more likely to me that they are piles of sand dumped near the beach to be used in a beach restoration project.
Why else would the area be "off limits", except to keep people from stealing sand from the piles?

(7,720 posts)to keep people away is because of the danger. Kids playing on those piles could easily be swallowed up and suffocated.

(35,300 posts)You're arguing against the usual rules for interpreting what's said. There's a bit of relevant material left out.
Most sand dunes are natural. Not all. But when the OP says "sand dunes" we assume that they're natural.
If they're not natural, then you expect that information to be added. "Artificial sand dunes."
These are rules for conversation (and not so much "rules" as "principles"--you can violate them and no rule is broken). Lawyers ignore them. Car dealers, too. And politicians. Violate the principles and you feel vaguely betrayed--and often when they're violated we want to say "liar" even though there's no actual falsehood.
