Frederick Sanger, Double Nobel Winner, Dies at 95

LONDON November 20, 2013 (AP)
By CASSANDRA VINOGRAD Associated Press

British biochemist Frederick Sanger, who twice won the Nobel Prize in chemistry and has been called the father of the genomic era, has died. He was 95.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute announced the death Wednesday. It did not provide further details.

Sanger died in his sleep Tuesday at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, according to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology — of which the biochemist was a founding member.

The MRC Laboratory called him an "extremely modest and self-effacing man whose contributions have made an extraordinary impact on molecular biology."

doing my honors project. He came to the school to give a seminar and was nice enough to sit in on our research presentations.

He was very kind to all of us who were, for some reason, kind of nervous giving our presentations in front of someone of his incredible stature.
