Was Stonehenege built for sound effects?

By Nick Collins, Science Correspondent,

But now a US researcher has come up with an intriguing new theory, claiming that the ancient stones were actually arranged to create a special sound effect.
Steven Waller said the ordering of stones at the rock monument in Wiltshire could be an attempt to recreate a sound illusion known as an "interference pattern" during prehistoric pipe-playing rituals.

The effect happens when two sounds clash, and results in some people hearing a louder noise and some a softer noise, depending on where they stand in relation to the source.

People taking part in a ritual dance around a pair of pipers would have heard the music unexpectedly grow quieter as they moved past certain spots due to this natural phenomenon, Mr Waller said.

that there was a Stonehenge monument in danger of being crushed by a dwarf. LOL

On a side note I think Spinal Tap should have gone on to be a "real" band as opposed to being a "fake" band. The singing was good if that is them playing the instruments they had that down. They could have even kept the cheese factor.

I saw them live, it was just as you might imagine from the movie. They did bring out "stonehenge" during the song.

Supposingly used a sound device to move his megalithic stones.

I went there once and nobody knows how a small man was able to build such a place.

I'm still fascinated by the megalith stones of Baalbek

Blocks 1 and 2 are two of the famous Trilithon - three enormous stones each 14 X 12 X 64 feet and weighing an estimated 800 tons (700,000 kg)

number 5 is a man...... We can't move these stones even now.

I had never heard of such large blocks of stone being used by the ancients. That is mind boggling! A twelve by fourteen by sixty four foot stone! Thanks for sharing

what a monster machine thanks for the link. I stand corrected .

Yeah the ancients placed these stones on top of other stones and moved them from a quarry one kilometer away.

Alexander built a temple upon another ancient temple that these stones laid under.
