NASA says satellite photos of a brand new volcanic island that sprang from the ocean near Japan show it has grown in size and may survive for a long period
The tiny island dubbed Niijima breached the surface of the Pacific Ocean in a volcanic eruption in late November about 600 miles south of Tokyo in waters considered part of Japanese territory.
Cameras on NASA's Earth Observing-1 satellite captured a natural-color image of Niijima on December 8 showing it is still erupting and growing, the space agency reported Thursday.
Now at 13.8 acres, three times its initial size, and standing 20 to 25 yards above sea level, the island is large enough to survive for at least several years, if not permanently, scientists from the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

(11,843 posts)Territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles, so this new island should be in the open ocean.

(41,694 posts)You can be 4500 miles from Washington and still be in the U.S.

(11,843 posts)Unless you go NNW or WSW from Tokyo, go 250 miles and you better have a boat as you are in the Ocean. Territorial waters are generally defined as up to 12 nautical miles from the mean tide water mark, so 600 miles south of Tokyo is hell and gone outside of the territorial waters of the main islands. The only thing that makes the new island Japanese is as the poster prior to stated. It is adjacent to an island that Japan has claimed.

(11,843 posts)Because unless you are specifically looking at a map of the Izu Islands, you are going to see open ocean. 600 miles south of Tokyo is practically half way to Guam.
Hell, how long did it take you to find a map tilted off North/South to try to make it seem like you knew what you were talking about? You really don't having anything better to do this close to Christmas?

(41,694 posts)where did I state it was south?
Must be nice to be such a nitpicker. And I could care less about Christmas

(11,843 posts)Might I suggest finding out what you are talking about before you try to offer advice to others?
Merry Christmas, Scrooge.

(41,694 posts)The article said south, I didn't.
With your attitude I bet you bring great joy whenever you leave the room.

(11,843 posts)Like I said, reading the article next time might save your apparently fragile ego.

(11,843 posts)Hey, there are lots of chat lines if you are bored and lonely, Only costs a couple bucks a minute. Or you could try reading the OP articles that you are missing out on. Might distract you and give you something to do. There's probably some stores still open where you could get yourself a nice coloring book and crayons.

(11,843 posts)The rest has been you being an ass about not knowing wtf you were talking about. Like I said, try reading the OP article before spouting off some tangental mishmash. It may save you from someone pointing out you don't know what you are talking about.
And now, since >I< have things to do while apparently you have nothing to do but pick random arguments. Goodbye.
