I'm thinking of getting my DNA tested for

hereditary reasons.

I have "heard" that some companies that do the test aren't very accurate and that the general DNA itself isn't 100 percent.

Has anyone any knowledge regarding the tests, its accuracy and the testing criteria?

1. I'm not sure what you mean by DNA

itself isn't 100% so I'll leave that unless you can clarify.

As for testing, a lot depends on what exactly you're testing for. If you are looking for a specific marker, like whether or not you are predisposed to a certain condition the findings of the DNA test can easily tell you if you are or are not. That being said however each condition is unique and just because you are predisposed does not mean that you will get the condition unless it's a direct genetic disorder like Huntingtons.

If you are looking for an overall genomics test, that is having your genome sequenced and scanned for problems, I'd personally call that a waste of a lot of money. Genomics testing as a screening tool for diagnostic testing is filled with errors and usually a lot more noise to signal than you can ever wade through.

I would say that IMO you should never undertake something like genetic screening without consulting a genetic Counselor who can be found through your Doctor. The interpretation of genetic tests is never straightforward and is prone to mistakes.

2. By "hereditary", do you mean recent ancestry, or deep ancestry?

3. My wife has a brother with a recessive genetic disorder.

She wanted to get tested to see if she was a carrier before we had our first child and sure enough, she was/is. She went to a genetic physician, but I don't remember the technical term for the specialty. He was in Rockford, IL I believe, but I'm sure there are a few close to your location. Good luck finding what you are after!
