Octopus opens a jar, from the inside
by Eleanor Imster in Videos » Earth, Science Wire
Check out this video. More evidence that octopuses are amazing.
In this video from Japans Enoshima Aquarium, an octopus unscrews the lid of a jar from the inside. Afterwards, the octopus stays in the jar, and who can blame him (her)?
The folks at Enoshima Aquarium in Fujisawa, Japan have some other wonderful videos, by the way, including these transparent eel larvae. To see more, visit the website TheKidShouldSeeThis.com, and search for the words Enoshima Aquarium.
Octopuses are very intelligent, amazing creatures. Did you see the story earlier this week about their ability to sense light with their skin?

(13,218 posts)that have trouble opening jars of (say) jelly. What do I do with the octopus after I finish with the jelly? Do I reuse him in another jar?

(111,255 posts)It just didn't want to be trapped in it.
Smart critters, they'll take over after we die off.

(3,817 posts)They're (sadly) short-lived creatures. I heard a biologist say that their short lives make it difficult to determine how much learning ability they have. There's not enough time to teach them.

(725 posts)I think I heard him saying. "Lefty-loosey; righty-tighty" just before he started turning on it.

(24,753 posts)He would have tightened the lid.

ET Awful
(24,753 posts)if you're inside the jar looking up at the lid, you would have to turn the lid to your right to loosen it.

(17,505 posts)When I visited my friend in DC, I always went to the zoo for an afternoon. My fave thing was the 3:00 feeding of the octopus in the Invertebrate House. She (the keeper told us it was a she) would know what time it was and get all excited... flashing colors across her bod and reaching out of the tank with her tentacles. She'd look right at you with her (superior) eyesight. SO much personality! So beautiful and graceful!

(845 posts)Entire invertebrate house is closed now.

(17,505 posts)Well, they only live about 3 or 4 years, so I'm told.
I imagine the zoo's on an impossibly tight budget because... y'know.... Exxon needs a subsidy. Besides, museums are as useless as theaters and music halls. Right??? Right???

(2,570 posts)On my first dive trip in Hawaii, the divemaster took us underwater, pointing out to me several things on the way down.
Then he points at a little red octopus and grabs him and puts him on my hand!
The little guy was scared, flailing his arms and squirting ink, but it was really cool!
Something I have always remembered and also responsible for turning me vegan.
I hate seeing octapi and lobsters in tanks, waiting to be chosen.

(5,829 posts)It liked the bait but fortunately didn't get hoojed - just clung on. Tiny thing. Body smaller than golf ball.
And yes, I returned it to ocean. They're too amazing to keep.
