Coventry astronomers have helped discover violent red flashes during one of the brightest black hole outbursts in recent years.
Lasting just fractions of a second, the flashes were documented by a team of British astronomers, who are collaborating as part of a project between Universities of Southampton, Sheffield and Warwick.
In June last year, researchers began analysing a black hole, V404 Cygni, which is thought to be about 7,800 light years from Earth.
The team of astronomers found the black hole, which is the first definitive of its kind to be identified in our galaxy, can become brighter when engulfing matter from nearby stars.
After that, the black hole typically emits material it is unable to digest.
