A tale of two civilisations

A tale of two civilisations
Monday, February 17, 2014
From Print Edition

Flourishing in the basins of Indus River some five-thousand years ago, the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation is considered to be the most developed and sophisticated civilisation of the time. Its advanced urban culture led to the establishment of the first urban centre in this region. Placing a high priority on hygiene, its urban plan also included the world’s first known urban sanitation system.

These days, on the ruins of this ancient civilisation, a modern civilisation is making some deliberate efforts to promote its culture. Unlike the ancient one, this modern civilisation is essentially divided into urban and rural segments. Regrettably, lawlessness and anarchy lie at the very heart of this civilisation where dozens of its innocent inhabitants are being brutally slaughtered daily. Extortion, ransom, target killing and bomb blasts have become its dominant features. Archaeologists are not certain what exactly caused the fall of the ancient Indus Valley civilisation. However, in the event of the collapse of this modern civilisation, historians will be relatively at ease in explaining the whole fiasco.
