He ran a commune in Oregon for a while, essentially taking over a whole town. He owned a fleet of Rolls Royces. The commune leadership tried to influence county elections by poisoning residents of a nearby town with Salmonella.

Charismatic, but a real scumbag. His antics spawned a good Simpsons episode, though.

He took over the town of Antelope, Oregon in the 80's, changed it's name to "Rajneesh" then tried to take over the county (Wasco) by bringing in voters from the streets of Portland. There were a couple of assassination attempts on county politicians. His followers gave him everything in return for his glorious enlightened presence.

One of the biggest religious swindlers in the last 50 years.
