So how was your Thanksgiving?

Did anyone in here say Grace by quoting "The God Delusion?" Any Fundie relatives go apoplectic? I hope not.

I had a great Thanksgiving, and will flaunt my Geographical Privilege by noting that I drove to Thanksgiving dinner with the top down (Southern California).

Much turkey was consumed. Many rug-rats ran around making noise. Our hostess gave me some Demonic-Atomic chili powder to bring home, apparently straight from some secret WMD lab in Mexico. This is the slow-burn stuff - not so hot at first, then sneaks up a few seconds later and builds a raging fire in your mouth. It's just great.

Oh, and Republicans were viciously mocked. Especially immigrant-hating Republicans, since one of the members of our dinner party just got her American citizenship.

In keeping with the finest historical traditions of our nation, dating back to those original illegal immigrants from Britain in the funny hats.

Or as I like to sum it up - "The Native Americans gave the new settlers food and shelter. The new settlers returned the favor by giving the Native Americans Jesus and syphillis."

By now they are used to my sense of humor, so as usual, I said the Bart Simpson grace:

Dear God, we paid for all this food ourselves so thanks for nothing.

[font color=teal size=3 face=papyrus]I like it a lot better when it falls on my b-day as I get out of the usual overcooked turkey and ham dinner that way

As for grace they made the mistake of asking me and I gave my usual response:

Good gravy
Good meat
Good gosh
Let's eat!

Family was surprisingly amused

Was a fun day of scattergories otherwise. Hope everyone else here had a nice holiday who celebrate it.

PS:
Apparently I have a dirty mind when it comes to word game...but what other sticky substance starts with a "j?"

The wife was going to cook for 4, but the other 2 had to cancel, so we joined a (her side of the) family gathering instead.

Out of about 18 people total
8 straight men/women, 10 gay men
6 Caucasian, 10 Hispanic
17 liberal and 1 conservative
2 "out" atheists (the wife and me), and 14-16 who give Jesus lip service

The matriarch of the clan insisted that someone say grace and one of the hosts jumped in before I could. Bart Simpson's prayer would not have gone over that well with this group. As the host was saying grace, I looked around at everyone - every head was bowed, even my wife, who prefers to not stir up the pot with her family.

The topics I could hear were the theatre, healthcare, the economy, cookies, the police, immigration, football, endless videos of nieces, nephews, and grandkids and what are the absent family members up to. No acrimony at all. It was great. And lots and lots of wine.

And we didn't have to clean up a thing!

But no leftovers (a good and bad thing).

And, oh yeah, it was 65 degrees and sunny in Houston.

The power was out across the southern NH/ Mass border region due to an early wet snow. We all have generators now, since our infrastructure is crap and any wet snow is potentially days of no electricity. We all met at my sister in law's house where they were grilling the bird as they had no power for the stove (but the internet was on, and the tv too, first things first!) I don't eat dead birds, but the fools who do all reported that it was just yummy, and none of them died, so I guess that is as fine a way to cook a large bird as any other.

First a secular one at home. Then the religious one at my parents house. Although not terribly religious. Just a prayer.

For the first time in many year there were NO REPUBLICANS at either!

for the first time in nearly 10 years. Will have Christmas and the day after off this year, too. As well as like 15 paid federal holidays. I never thought I'd be able to have holidays, including major holidays, off as an RN....

ahem

But Mr. Heddi still works per-diem in an ER down the road and he had to work T'day 11a-7p. Nice holiday pay, and we weren't going out of town anyways...everyone lives far away, and we drove last year.

Because it's just the 2 of us (and the cats), doing a turkey thing is just wasteful, double especially since we're really not turkey fans. Too...turkey'y. And after a day the leftovers get that nasty gamey taste So our t'givings have food that is rich and fattening and only made once or twice a year (hoilday and/or anniversary and/or birthday, that type of thing)

This year was Chicken Cordon Bleu, smashed & seasoned red potatoes, home-made peasant bread, gravy, petty peas, and I made a pecan pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting. Think carrot cake, but with pineapple instead.

It was heavenly!
