Religion is special. You can't say bad things about it. Doesn't matter that your comment was about a *religion* (i.e., an IDEA) not a group of *people* and thus can't be "hate speech."

The religion-protecting nannies don't win them all, but they do play every game to silence dissenting views. It's what the religious have been doing for millennia - they can't burn us at the stake anymore (in most places), so they have to take what they can get.

Not sure what, exactly, but something. Maybe they are, maybe not. Maybe restrict the # of alerts any member can make in a given period of time. That's doable. At least that way the fools would have to make them count. Or make these groups actual safe havens in deed and not just in name.

on edit - just wanted to say that the last 10 juries I have served upon (and I get called a LOT), the alerts have been ridiculous. They are either without any merit or they make no sense at all.

There's the MIRT team that deals with obvious conservative disruptors and spammers, and sometimes-here-sometimes-not admin team, but otherwise the entire site is pretty much run via the jury system. And with the privilege given religion here at DU, it's pretty easy to get a jury of religionists who despise our very presence.

Hell, I got called a fucking asshole by a long-time DUer (MADem), and the jury didn't vote to hide it, I suspect because in the conversation it was very apparent who was the believer and who was the atheist. If that doesn't demonstrate that religious privilege exists at DU, I'm not sure what would.

That was a really dumb Hide. Whenever that happens, come in here and gripe about it, as you did. I suspect many of the alerters are people banned from this group, so seeing these long threads about the Hides at least pisses them off, I hope. Sort of like Virtually Mooning them.

I can certainly sympathize, after gettihg a couple of weird Hides myself fairly recently. One for speaking naughtily about religion, which of course is the raison-d'fucking-etre of this whole group.

The other for using the word t*ts. Ironically, that was in my post about a FEMEN demonstration - one of the most aggressively feminist groups on earth. Somehow I became a misogynist when I wasn't looking.

So one Hide for religion and one for anatomy.

The problem is that many people conflate Islam with Muslim. People on both sides of the argument concerning Islamophobia make this mistake. Islam is a religion and a Muslim is a person.

You can be defending Muslims from hatred by the bigots, and then they accuse you of supporting Islam. Islam is a religion, and like all religions, it is based on myths. Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam includes a lot of harmful messages in its religious texts, though I understand it has the least amount of violence among the three.

It goes the other way: you can criticize Islam and then be accused of being a bigot. Religion deserves no special privilege. Religions deserve criticism, just like any other bad idea.

As long as you are consistent and blame all religious practitioners for the same faults, then there is nothing wrong with your insult of Islam.
