Must have been the agnostics praying.
Remember that early in Christian history there was a (so called) heresy among the churches.
Ultimately the 'Gnostic' teaching was defeated by orthodox opposition.
Thus the surviving dominate Christian tradition is officially opposed to "gnosticism' and thus is truly 'agnostic'.

I am nearly 78, after all.
But I am still present and accounted for, although I am more agnostic than atheist.
